The foods I believe are better avoided all contain substances known to increase oxidative stress.

First and foremost is sugar. Consuming sugars causes blood sugar levels to spike, which in turn causes oxidative stress to rise significantly. Avoiding sugar and carbohydrates, such as those found in sweets, is very important in my opinion.

The second category includes foods known to be carcinogenic. There are quite a few examples of these. Carcinogenic substances include things like charred meat or fish, artificial sweeteners like aspartame, and certain mountain vegetables such as bracken, royal fern, and butterbur sprouts. These foods contain substances that significantly increase oxidative stress, which has been clearly linked to carcinogenic effects.

The third category involves substances that are well-known to cause various diseases and cancers. There are two main examples here: excessive alcohol consumption and, while not technically food, smoking. Both heavy drinking and smoking drastically increase the risk of cancer as well as many other diseases. This is because they contribute to oxidative stress, which effectively “rusts” the body.

By avoiding these three categories of foods and substances, I believe it’s possible to lead a healthier lifestyle that emphasizes disease prevention and overall wellness.
